Mid-Season Report
All the members of the Walden Art club would like to thank the Greater City of Sudbury for their Arts and Culture Grant without it we would not be able to share our art or manage all the different ways we offer the “hands on” programs to our community.
This year 2012-2013 our members have been presenting small workshops to introduce the club to various different media. These mini-workshops give us a chance to try new things without a great expenditure on different art materials before we know if we want to commit to a new media. We've had workshops on gouache, casein, water-miscible oils and airbrushing. These experimental sessions have been great fun!
Several of our members have been blessed with opportunities to travel. They have brought back many photos of beautiful landscapes, flora and fauna, etc. that they have been willing to share via slideshows, and generously allowing our membership to use these photos as reference material for painting or drawing. We have enjoyed fascinating scenes from the American Southwest, and the Pacific Northwest (Washington and Oregon), as well as underwater scenes. Our members really appreciate this sharing, as we don't all seem to travel to the same locations.
One of our club's main focuses is our involvement in our community. We consider it our mandate to provide exposure and education to our community in various ways. For this reason, we continue to participate in our local Walden fall fair at the Anderson farm. We provide learning opportunities for both children and parents, where they are able to participate in various arts. The children especially had fun sculpting and making bookmarks. The weather this year was very cold and windy, so unfortunately, our outdoor watercolour area did not work out too well -- we will try that again next year! We also had a display of flower-themed paintings at the horticultural society's show at the Farmer's Market, and we continue to have art on display at the doctors’ offices in Lively.
For the second year in a row, we are going with our Artists in Action format for our spring show in April. The community seems to enjoy seeing each artist with their own work and watching them at work. This allows them to ask questions about the processes involved. For the past several years, we have had a community canvas, where visitors to our show could try their hand at painting. As we consider ourselves a "painting and drawing" club, this year we decided to do a community doodle instead. We will have a large white board, black markers of various thicknesses, and a lot of sample "texture drawings" for people to choose from.
As another means of community involvement some of our members volunteer their time to teach art in schools. We feel it is important to encourage young artists, so again this year we will present two awards to students participating in the Emergence show at the Art Gallery of Sudbury which is held concurrently with the NOAA show in March. This also gives some of our members some experience in jurying. Written by: Lynn Quinn
